Open the text document you created in the previous exercise, My First Online Book.
Continue planning your book by answering the following questions:
- Who are your primary readers? Describe the people you most want to reach.
- What do they already know about your topic? Are they beginners, experienced readers, or a mixture of both?
- What do they want to learn or accomplish? Identify the questions they may have or the problems they want to solve.
- Which language or languages do they understand? Consider whether your book should be written in one language or more than one.
- How might they access your book? Think about computers, tablets, smartphones, and other relevant ways of reading online.
- How will your book help them? Write one or two sentences describing what readers should gain from it.
Do not worry if your answers change later. As you develop your book, you may discover more about your readers and adjust your plans accordingly.
Save your document. You will use these notes when defining the scope of your book and deciding which chapters and sections to include.
Remember: When you understand your readers, you can create a book that is more relevant, accessible, and useful to them.
